1935 Holiday Caving Journal
This is the journal of a month caving holiday that Peter Binns and his friend Peter Longbottom had in April/May 1935, when he was 17 years old. The original had become very faded, and so it was transcribed some time ago by Peter's sister, Sheila. The photos, diagrams and maps within the journal did image well, and they have been appended to the text. Most of the time was spent with Eli Simpson in Chapel-le-Dale. Simpson seemed to have had a particular penchant for harvesting speleothems... Eli Simpson was to form the British Speleological Association in July the same year.
Binns was accompanied for some of the holiday by his friend Peter Longbottom, who also maintained a journal which is in the care of the Bristol Exploration Club. This confirms many of the details found below, in particular the speleothem collection exercise in Gunnerfleet Cave. Longbottom's account is as follows:"
"We took a few stalactites down and packed the smaller ones in one of the boxes of saw-dust and the larger ones we wrapped in sacking between the two boards... Mr. Simpson had taken some stalactites down and had packed them in the second tin of saw-dust and had nearly cut a large stalactite".
The journal is also available as a PDF file.
