1934 Holiday Caving Journal

Introduction

This is the journal of a two-week caving holiday that Peter Binns and his friend Kenneth Appleton (Pom) had in April 1934, when Peter was 16 years old. A week of this was spent in the shooting hut on Leck Fell, when they did a considerable amount of caving on their own and with Eli Simpson. Of particular note is a descent of Rumbling Hole entrance pitch which they undertook by themselves. The journal illustrates the significant energy, commitment and initiative was shown by the two young lads. It also provides an insight in Eli Simpson's character...

It should be noted that this was not Peter's first experience of caving. His 1935 journal mentions that he had explored Rowten Cave from the pothole through to Jingling the summer before, and it would be reasonable to suppose that this was not his only previous experience.

The journal is also available as a PDF file.
